What can you expect from this class? Some knowledge about using computers.  How to send and receive emails. How to create email lists.  What email programs are available for us to use.

We should also learn when not to open an email. When an email might be a virus, even if you know who sent it. How many email accounts can I have and should I put my name in my email?  How long is your email kept?

Gmail seems to be used quite a bit lets start with Gmail

How long does Google keep your e-mail after you delete it?

I heard Google keeps your e-mail for 60 days on their servers from the minute you delete it and then up to 90 to 120 days on backup storage drives…. so around 180 days all e-mail is kept after it is deleted from either Gmail or Google Apps….

BE AWARE your emails are not really safe

Google will no longer scan emails in Gmail accounts in order to sell targeted advertising, the company said Friday.  The company will make the change later this year, bringing Gmail in line with its G Suite products for business users. “This decision brings Gmail ads in line with how we personalize ads for other Google products,” Diane Greene, senior vice president of Google Cloud, wrote in a blog post. “Ads shown are based on users’ settings. Users can change those settings at any time, including disabling ads personalization.”

The blog post says that “Consumer Gmail content will not be used or scanned for any ads personalization after this change.” That leaves the door open for the company to continue to scan emails for other purposes, like sorting them by priority, or suggesting replies you might send and Google will continue to display ads in Gmail based on what it knows about users. Which, we know, is a whole lot. In 2014, Gmail updated its terms of service to inform users that their emails were analyzed by software in order to target ads. “Some of the regular people who use Google services disliked the way their email contents were being used to target ads way back in 2004,” What technology companies call “personalization” is what some people call “creepy.” By knowing users’ interests and demographic information, Google, Facebook, and other companies can sell advertisers access to targeted audiences. Google offers users the ability to turn off ad personalization on this page.  Though Alphabet, Google’s parent company, has expanded into businesses including mobile phones, home assistants, and autonomous vehicles, it still made 88 percent of its revenue from advertising in 2016.

Where is my email stored?

The messages and everything else are stored on Google’s servers, and you can access them from any computer.

Gmail gives you the option, however, to download your messages to an email program on your computer and read them there. If you set your Gmail up to download to your computer, you are now storing your messages and addresses on your computer, and they can only be accessed from your computer. Just about every mail provider you listed in your question gives you the option of accessing your messages in both ways,

If you access your email using a program on your computer like Outlook Express, Outlook, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail, Eudora or Mozilla Thunderbird, the email messages, address book and settings are stored on your computer, If you access your email using your web browser, like Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Mozilla Firefox, then the email messages are stored online, and will be available to you no matter what computer you use to access them.

I have been using Microsoft office for a long time as it was the tool we used at work.  Lately I been using Gmail and testing Opera mail.   In my Gmail account below I have three Gmail accounts and one AT&T and all my emails from them go into my Gmail account.

I use different emails so let look at AT&T or yahoo email

For AT&T

It is on an ATT Yahoo server it is also on your computer but a copy is kept on The ATT Yahoo server for a period of time.  You can go into mail programs and change that time.   We will discuss this later when we talk about setting

How long is your email on these servers?

If you lose your internet provider what happens to your email.   Most likely you will lose your address and email so be careful always forward it for a few months before changing provider.

Generally, you lose your email if you use an ISP email. I lost my Comcast and Verizon and AT&T when I ditched them and that taught me to never use an ISP email. If you cancel one, make sure you forward emails to a different address.

This does not happen with gmail.

Lets look as how to tell if an email should be opened

  • Never give out your email address to anyone you don’t trust, this will ensure that spam and infected emails will stay at a minimum.
  • If you are constantly receiving spam, you can either download an anti-spam program or create a new email account.
  • Make sure you have good anti-virus protection; in the scenario that you accidentally download a virus, it would automatically stop and delete it from your computer before it does its job.

Recognize and secure a hacked Yahoo Mail account

There are some warning signs that indicate when an account has been compromised. If you see anything that suggests you’ve been hacked, there are some important steps you can take to secure your account.

Signs your account has been hacked

When in doubt, secure your account

  • Use Yahoo Account Key or two-step verification
  • Change your password; make sure it’s strong enough
  • Check and update your account recovery email information
  • If you get locked out of your account, use the Sign-in Helper

Review your Yahoo Mail settings

Check your account settings for any changes you didn’t make. Hackers could edit some of these to get copies of emails you send or receive. Restore any settings if needed.

Access all your settings using your desktop web browser from the Settings icon   or   in the top right corner of the Yahoo Mail page.

  • Filters
  • Signature
  • Sending name
  • Auto-forwarding
  • Reply-to address
  • Vacation response
  • Blocked addresses

If a phone number shows up for you to call never call it just shut down your browser or reboot your computer.  Never accept a phone call from anyone telling you your computer has a virus.   (story)   No one will ever call you about your computer except a person trying to get into your computer to put a virus on it or someone trying to get money from you.
